Aloha Havana: Big Sugar, The Cuban Revolution and Hawaii’s Statehood.
Hawaii, like Cuba is about to observe a 50th anniversary. As colonies annexed by the United States in 1898, both had a shared relationship with the sugar industry. Is there a relationship between Hawaii’s statehood and Cuba’s revolution, one that involves Big Sugar, the Southern Democrats of the 1950’s, and commodity fixing?
